Monasteries of the BECOSA association [May 2026]

Session of formation

Project #26M051

In 1991, Abbot Gernot of Inkamana and Abbot Willibrord of Subiaco-Polokwane (formerly Pietersburg) contacted communities across Southern Africa, inviting them to send delegations to Inkamana Abbey to discuss ways to foster closer cooperation. The inaugural meeting took place in March 1992, marking the founding of BECOSA (Benedictine Communities of Southern Africa), an association uniting Benedictine communities from South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Regular meetings have been held annually ever since.

In 1998, the Order of the Holy Cross (OHC)—an Anglican Benedictine community based in the United States—joined the association.

Twelve communities are represented in BECOSA.

Project:

Each year, the BECOSA association offers training sessions and workshops for formators, as well as for those in temporary vows, novices, and postulants, thereby strengthening unity among the communities.

From August 21 to 25, 2026, a session for young people in formation will take place in Windhoek (Namibia) focusing on the use of technology in formation—specifically, the impact of technology on religious life. A workshop will also be held on preparing for the 2029 Jubilee of Benedictine life and reawakening the spirit of Saint Benedict within the communities. A total of 113 participants are expected, accompanied by two lead formators and one formator from each participating community; the session will thus bring together 123 members of BECOSA communities.
